I usually keep them in for about a week or two, making sure to moisturize my hair while they’re in. I also avoid making them too tight so I don’t put stress on my scalp.

When I take them down, I often get a nice twist-out, which is a bonus. It gives me another style without extra effort.

Keeping things simple has worked best for me, and my hair has been thriving because of it.

I finally found one that gives me a good balance of moisture without making my hair feel greasy. It absorbs well and helps keep my hair soft throughout the day.

I also learned that I don’t need to use a lot. Using too much product was actually making my hair feel worse instead of better.

My first big chop wasn’t something I planned with confidence—it was something I arrived at after months of frustration, breakage, and feeling disconnected from my hair. Letting go of damaged ends felt emotional, even intimidating. I wasn’t just cutting hair; I was releasing expectations, fear, and the idea that my hair needed to look a certain way to be healthy.

What I didn’t expect was how freeing it would feel. Starting over forced me to slow down and learn my hair from the beginning—its texture, its needs, and its limits. I had to relearn moisture, stop over-manipulating, and focus on scalp care instead of length. The process taught me patience and reminded me that growth doesn’t happen when hair is stressed or neglected.

The biggest lesson was understanding that healthy hair isn’t about holding on—it’s about letting go when something no longer serves you. My big chop gave me clarity, confidence, and a new relationship with my hair rooted in care rather than comparison. If you’re standing at that crossroads, know that starting fresh can be the beginning of something stronger.

I’ll use the exact same products and routine and somehow get completely different results. It’s honestly confusing sometimes.

I’m starting to accept that my hair just isn’t going to be predictable, and that’s okay. I just try to work with it instead of fighting it.

For a long time, scalp irritation was something I quietly endured. The itching and tenderness showed up most after wash days, leaving me uncomfortable and frustrated, especially when nothing I tried seemed to help. I kept switching products, hoping for relief, but the irritation always returned. What changed things for me wasn’t another product—it was slowing down and really listening to what my scalp was trying to tell me.

I began stripping my routine back to the basics and giving my scalp room to breathe. I washed less often, handled my scalp more gently, and paid close attention to how it reacted after each step. I also became more careful with my protective styles, making sure they weren’t installed too tight that added to the discomfort I was already feeling. Gradually, the constant irritation eased, and for the first time in a long while, my scalp felt calm instead of inflamed.

That experience taught me patience and self-trust. Healing didn’t happen overnight, but learning to care for my scalp instead of fighting it made all the difference. Everyone’s hair and scalp journey is personal, but approaching care with intention and compassion can lead to real relief. If you’re going through something similar, know that you’re not alone—and that listening to your scalp can be the first step toward healing.
